The short version
- The latest patch, version 1.001.006, includes an option to turn off scent trails for Whiskey Bottle collectibles, Material Crate audio pings as well as Nightmare Door roots using three separate toggles in the Gameplay menu.
- Senses will remain for what developer Insomniac Games described in the patch notes as "story-critical" moments, but that should at least be enough to limit how often they are a nuisance.
- The game's ever-visible, bright-lit blue trails are meant to help players navigate to the next mission objective and locate collectibles hidden around levels.
What happened
However, their implementation has been controversial, as many players saw them as unnecessary given how linear the game's levels typically are. Elsewhere in the patch notes, a number of crashes players reported have been fixed, alongside instances where the player could become stuck.
